New Computers! Crying and Bleeding Ensue!

Yep, it's NEW COMPUTER TIEM!! YAY!!!
So, I do pretty much all of my artwork on my tablet now, and my desktop has been relegated to the purpose of gaming and web browsing, and maybe some other stuff now and then. Mostly, games.
Problem with this is that you can't play games if the computer is a piece of shit. Well, not new games anyway. So it was time for an upgrade; it's been about three years and change since my last update, and it was high time to get something that works and can do stuff again. My wife needed a new machine as well, since hers is a piece of crap even worse than what I've been using.
So I hopped on newegg and ordered up a whole truckload of parts to build our new computers, since doing it that way can save a person hundreds of dollars and ensure that you get the best parts available and that the manufacturers don't skimp and give you crappy memory or a junk motherboard.
This practice is fine, unless something comes in DOA.
Yep, sure enough, there was a dead motherboard in the batch.
For those of you who've never put your own computer together, it's hard to explain the unbelievable aggravation levels that can be created when something goes wrong. See, debugging failed computer parts can be a pretty mysterious process, and there are sharp pointy metal fins on every god damn thing you'll be working with. It's sort of like automotive maintenance, only it's nearly impossible to tell if something is damaged just by looking at it. And if something is obviously dead from looking at it you've probably had to disable your smoke alarm and open the windows to air out the evil purple smoke of electronic death from your living space.
I'm not a person who handles frustration well; at least not form machines. Like I've said before, I expect people to disappoint me horribly, but machines should bend to my will as a superior tool using mammal. (HAHA superior! LOL!!). If you've never been so frustrated that you find yourself doubled over, feebly pounding on the case while tears stream down your face, begging it to 'Just work!! for fucks' sake WHY WON'T YOU WOOORRRRRK!!!!' then you've obviously not been doing this long.
Anyway, this time was just like the last time, and the time before that, and I wasted many hours debugging hardware and swapping parts in and out and leaving bits of valuable flesh all over the sharp jagged projections of the computer case. The motherboard is still en route, so hopefully the replacement will work.
The good news is that my wife let me use the working one to play games and putz around, since I don't think she could possibly tolerate me moping and grumbling for the next week or so as I wait for the replacement part to ship.

I feel your pain...
I just built my fiance a new machine, also through newegg. I got everything up and running, all of her software and games installed (yes, fiance is a gamer - it's how we met!) and then it stops booting!?!? I open it up, check connections, swap cables, trying to make it boot each time. Nothing worked!!! I did some internet research and some people said that they had a similar problem and changing the boot order fixed it. WTF? Well, I tried it, but no dice. By the way, I salvaged a few bits from her old PC, meaning she has one SATA DVD-ROM and one IDE. The IDE registers as a boot-device, but SATA is no-can-do. Hard drive reads fine, but not the SATA DVD.. GRRR. That's another issue, however. Long story short, I had to reformat AGAIN because nothing worked and I couldn't fix it :( And, even though I have no idea what, something in that infernal machine bit my finger and took my valuable flesh as well. I truly know your pain, friend.
Oh yea... Huzzah for $30 Win 7 for students!!! I love Win 7, but I'm still worried about stability for some programs so MY computer is actually a triple-boot XP, Vista, and Win 7. I love to play with computers :D When I built mine, my mobo was DOA too. Half of the pins for the processor seat were bent!? It was the weirdest thing I'd ever seen for a mobo failure. Anyways, Yay Newegg!
Still Waiting
A buddy of mine made me all paranoid that it might have been a bad power supply, so I held off shipping for a few extra days. And, of course, it wasn't the PSU, and I shed more blood rigging it up with an older working power supply to double check the settings. *sigh*
The driver situation for Win7 is pretty good, way better than Vista, which was a catastrophic clusterfuck, but there are still some things missing. The Intel onboard chipset drivers (Intel 4 I think on this thing) are one noted annoying example that I'm dealing with. Every second sleep recovery on my tablet corrupts the video display, and I have to reboot. Fortunately rebooting under Win7 is pretty damn fast, but I wish Intel would get some fixed up drivers out.
I'm also waiting for the new Catalyst drivers for my Radeon card, which I think should be out today. The 5 series ATI cards are a little clunky with the early rounds of drivers.
Drivers me crazy
Yea, I know. Really. Bad. Pun. But, it had to be done. I built a computer for my father recently with the 5850 in it, and I would complain there too. The Intel 4 drivers are your burden alone, here. And yea, for Vista, I did what I did for Windows 7. I waited a bit to get a feel for the problems, and then I just added it to my collection via extra boot options, so that way I wasn't so cornered. I steered clear of Vista for quite some time, even on my own machine. Sure, some was laziness, but the rest was to avoid being buttfucked by Microsoft. I didn't feel like wasting too much of my time yet, and then Vista SP1 came out and I started playing more seriously. It's a decent OS now, but Win7 is much better for me. Luckily for you, as with most new technology, driver updates should be somewhat frequent in the beginning.
