Chasing Perfection

Opposable Thumbs: Don't take them for granted

So the other day I was poking around at one of my favorite art-oriented sites, the Flight Forums. An absurdly productive animator/artist named Pascal Campion made a pretty interesting comment. Well, probably not that interesting to most people, but to an idiot with OCD like me, it was profound:

"My suggestion to you would be NOT to spend so much time developing it, but to jump right into your comic. If you spend too much time on the research, you're going to tire out, and make the jump from the conceptual to the actual even harder."

Sort of dumb that it's so inspiring to me, yeah? It's not profound, it was just a quick comment on a forum directed at someone else, but this dude is epically prolific in his work, and it's all good stuff.

I've got that pseudo-neurotic perfection quest thing going on, where I wind up hating a lot of my work as I near completion, because it's not just exactly right. It's a huge reason why I never get anything done, and have ten thousand half-completed projects laying around.

I suppose reading a comment like that from an artist that I've been following for a few years and seen how much work he puts out makes it hit home more than it would normally.

Now I just need to practice taking a deep breath and letting imperfections go...
